Three Things Thursday: Half Marathon Countdown, Battling a Hunger Games Addiction, and the S.S. Jennie and Annie Edition

Thing 1: Half Marathon Countdown
It’s getting real, people! As of Sunday, when my calendar switched over to its current view, Half Marathon Day is visible! Yup, it’s hanging out in the lower right-hand corner, reminding me that: MY FIRST HALF MARATHON IS 30 DAYS AWAY! Woohoo!

The great news is that I feel ready already. Last weekend, I did my longest run to date: 11.11 miles (Because once you’ve run 11, what’s another .11 to fill the screen with 11s?). This weekend, 12’s on the schedule. Next weekend, I plan to run the full 13.1. Then, it’s just a downhill coast to the big day. Excited much? Yes, I am. :)

In other exciting news, the organizers just announced that the half marathon portion of the event has sold out!

Thing 2: Hunger Games Addiction
It’s true. It’s happened again. I’ve been completely sucked into a series! This time it’s The Hunger Games series. I started Book One on, ohhhh, Sunday. Books One and Two are read. On Wednesday evening, when I realized I was about 10% done with Book Three, I officially cut myself off for 24 hours. Don’t worry. I haven’t gotten the shakes… yet. If you haven’t already read this series, you might want to check it out. I’m just sayin’.

Thing 3: Part of the Schooner Jennie and Annie Has Washed Ashore on the Leelanau Peninsula
I had to throw this one in for good measure. If we’re FB friends, you’ve already seen it. But what can I say? I love instances where “Jennie” is spelled the right way. :)

Ok, here’s the short story: A piece of a schooner that sunk in 1872 washed ashore in one of my favorite vacation spots recently. The name of said ship is thought to be the Jennie and Annie! For the long story, click here. As Kevin so astutely put it: “Do you see the irony in the fact that it is the Jennie and the Annie (eg. Annie Villa Irvin) and in about a month, the shipwreck that will be Kevin Neumann and Jeff Irvin will wash across the finish line in TX? (Ideally in under 3:05).” Yes, yes, I do.

Quatre Things Thursday: Freelancing, Meeting Baby B., Visiting the Vet & Celebrating the Mitten’s 175th Edition

Thing 1: A Freelancing, We Go!
Thanks so much for the congratulations and well wishes regarding my venture into the world of being a freelance editor! So far, nothing but goodness! It’s been kind of unusual in that my days have been filled with 8/8+ hours of contract work for the company I just left. So, basically, it’s been the same work in a different location. Not a bad thing, as what I was most looking forward to shedding was that loooonnngggg commute! It’s like each day has 2 more hours now, and I’ve been loving how I’ve been able to spend those extra hours! Examples? See things 2 and 3!

My New Coworker
And BONUS!: Isn’t my new coworker the cutest??

Thing 2: Meeting Baby B!
On Monday, we were able to visit our friends Rob and Sheri… who recently brought home a beautiful baby girl!

photo(39)
I’ll give you one guess what her name is!

If you guessed “Elise,” you’d be correct! It was so wonderful to be able to catch up with Rob and Sheri and to meet their one-week-old princess. It was also very nice to have been able to make them dinner and dessert AND be at their house by the time I’d normally be getting home from work. Dinner seemed to be a big hit too as Rob, after a cupcake, finished off what was left of the Chicken, Black Bean, Red Pepper, Colby Jack Cheese, Etc. Enchiladas. Awesomeness all around!

Now, normally, in true shutterbug fashion, this is where a picture of the super cute baby would go. HOWEVER, except for the 20 minutes or so that we spent eating, my arms were full of baby the entire time we were there. Baby hog? Yes, I am. :)

Thing 3: A Vet Visit and a Clean Bill of Health for Bailey!
Mid-week vet visit, what?? That would have been impossible just a week ago. The visit went really well! We started off with a weigh-in. I led him over to the scale, said “sit,” he sat, and the tech was so impressed! Apparently, other dogs don’t do that?? He ended up weighing in at 55.5 pounds (“of lean muscle,” Kevin says) at this, his 15-month appointment. He then handled the exam, the two shots, and the nail-trim like a champ. Though, he was deemed a “Mama’s Boy” by the doctor as he stuck to me like glue the entire time we were there. Me and my shhhaaadddooowww! It was really cute, though. We walked into the exam room and he sat behind me, a safe distance from the doctor. He was lifted onto the exam table and immediately scooted over and leaned on me the entire time she was looking him over and administering the shots, which he didn’t even notice as he was too busy chowing down on the biscuits she’d given him. Success!

photo(41)
All tuckered out after that trip to the vet! Being a puppy is hard work!

Thing 4: Happy 175th Birthday, Michigan!
I’m proud to be from the mitten-shaped land of the Great Lakes, GR, the Leelanau Peninsula, the Motor-City, and Mackinac Island. A state where you’re never more than 6 miles from some body of water or another. A land where rich traditions and history blend with beach days and beautiful sunsets. A state where a map is never further away than the hand on the end of your arm. A land with four beautiful and very distinct seasons. A state with an abundance of fun things to do. A land of delicious things to eat—from apples, cherries, and garden-fresh produce, to Buddy’s Pizza and Hudsonville Ice Cream. Yup. I’m a pretty happy Michigander!

One of my favorite Pure Michigan ads, this one showcases quite a few of my favorite places in the mitten!

New Life Chapter… Aaannnddd GO!

Where have I been? Good question, and one with an equally good response. I’ve been busy. “So?” you say. “We’re all busy.” Yes, that’s true… But this was a different kind of busy. This was a life-altering-event kind of busy. As in: giving two-weeks notice, packing up my office after six and a half years of being a full-time/in-house Editor, and making the leap to the freelance realm!

It’s day one. I’m busy. It’s a blessing. It’s truly a dream come true!

Resolution Run Recap

Happy 2012! Hope your NYE celebrations were happy and fun! We had a blast closing out the year with 778 of our neighbors at the 12.31.11 Resolution Run.

The 4-mile race takes place in East GR, with the starting line just a short bike ride away from our house. The course goes around Reeds Lake the opposite way than we normally go—so while you’re running down the colossal beast known as the Hall Street Hill, there are 3 long climbs with your name on ‘em. With sunshine, temps in the 40s, and only a bit of wind to contend with, it was pretty much optimum racing conditions for the last day of December in the mitten.

Resolution Run 12.31
Pre-race photo-op

I wasn’t sure about what to expect from this race. After finally kicking out the last bug that invaded my body, another moved in shortly after Christmas. With a chest-rattling cough, shortness of breath, and achy fatigue, I’d been taking my runs (when I ran, that is!) slow, short, and easy for a month when you add both illnesses together. So, to say that I had a laid-back approach to this race was putting it mildly. My only goal was finishing. To further illustrate my lack of preparation, I was putting together my tuneage playlist in the starting corral with 7 minutes to go to until starting time—while simultaneously fielding compliments and questions about my new Nike running tights/skirt combo (a super awesome Christmas gift from the hubs!).

I had a lot of fun with this race. We knew a bunch of people running, but didn’t have time to find more than a couple of them before the race. So, it was just me and the music. There was a shuffle fail early on, three Eminem songs in a row, really?? Near the end, though, the music saved the day. I Just Wanna Run reminded me that despite not feeling great, I was still having a good time out there. The part of Party Rock Anthem that repeats “Get up. Get up. Get up.” over and over on the last big climb? Awesome. Kevin said that it looked like I was having fun—”almost like you were dancing” he said—when he saw me during the final mile after his big finish. Ha! You know what? I totally was—Tik Tok! He also asked me if I saw/heard a coworker and his wife cheering for me within the last 1/10 of a mile. I totally didn’t—oops!—as I was completely in the zone, speeding to the finish with Invincible streaming through my headphones.

This year, my time was 38:51. For comparison’s sake, last year, I finished this race in 39:45. Improvement! New year, new 4-miler PR! After the race, we got a quick snack, talked with friends for a bit, and picked up Kevin’s medal. Yes, medal! He took fourth in his age group with a smokin’ fast time of 24:47! Yowza! Be sure to check out his take on the race. Almost as soon as we got on our bikes to head home, we saw a dog that was wandering around the HS parking lot looking a bit misplaced. After calling the number on her tags, we came to the conclusion that she must have a habit of wandering off as her person didn’t even know she was missing and seemed rather nonchalant about the whole thing as he jogged down with a leash to pick her up. I would lose my mind if Bailey was missing! I almost had a panic attack when Kevin texted me this picture AFTER Bailey was already inside safe and sound!

Puppy Rescue
Kevin and Chai waiting for her person to come pick her up!

Later that night, before the bubbly, we took Bailey for a walk to try out the new night-safety vests that Kevin ordered from a local runner he met at the Sleigh Bell Shuffle. We caused quite a stir with their awesomeness—like people-waiting-at-stoplights-rolling-down-their windows-to-yell-“I like your dog!” Don’t worry, the admiration doesn’t seem to have gone to his head. :)

Oh What Fun It Is to Run in a Sleigh Bell Shuffle!

Last night, Kevin and I ran in the Sleigh Bell Shuffle and had a total blast! We were excited to learn that local running store Striders was opening a new location in Eastown, conveniently located within walking, running, and/or biking distance from our house. And let me tell you, it seems to be worth every bit of that excitement. The store opened on Monday, December 19, and by Wednesday, December 21 at 6:30 pm, they were playing host to about 250 runners for the SBS! Talk about hitting the ground—errr—running!

image

After work, I zoomed home to change and walk Bailey. It was sort of a last-minute decision to not bring him along.* After all, how many organized runs encourage you to bring along your furry running buddy?? But we didn’t know how chaotic it was going to be and we had plans to go to dinner afterward with our friends, Tim and Jessica, who drove in from Holt to join in the fun!

180568_1829007250470_1399000892_32109868_7582256_nAnd now, we interrupt this post for a public service announcement: We’ve been talking about forming a team (or teams, based on interest—let us know if you want in!) for the 2012 FMR. However, other than announcing a date months ago, there has been no word from the powers that be about the 2012 race. Ahhh! Fingers crossed that they’re just champion procrastinators because no 2012 FMR would just be the cause of much sadness!

Anywho, I arrived at Striders with minutes to spare. I found the store to be absolutely packed, with more  runners spilling out unto the sidewalks and into the parking lot. Despite the great turnout, I quickly found Kevin (who had run to Striders as the destination point of an 8-mile "warmup" run—the 3-mile SBS was a mere victory lap for him!) and the Corsons. Shortly thereafter, we were off and running!

The SBS was a 3 mile loop from Striders Eastown, down Wealthy, through Gaslight Village, up Breton and around some neighborhood streets to Plymouth and back to the store. What a perfect loop it was—filled with the Christmas lights of East GR and straight through the small-town charm of Gaslight Village. If that wasn’t enough to put everyone in a truly festive mood, then surely the jingle bells, bows, ribbons, antlers, and Santa suits worn by some fellow runners and their pets did the trick!

After the fun run, everyone reconvened at Striders for recovery food in the way of yummy tree-shaped cookies and pizza. The store raffled off a bunch of prizes, which were chucked at the winners by a jovial Striders employee in a Santa hat. What a fun event!

Afterward, we headed downtown for dinner at Founders Brewing Co. It was absolutely packed without an empty chair to be had in the place. We placed our food order and were standing 2-deep at the bar ordering drinks when making sad puppy dog eyes at people who’d finished eating waiting patiently paid off and we scored a table. Victory! We’d not be sitting cross-legged on the stage for this meal! Kevin got the Blushing Monk sandwich (my usual order), while I tried something new with the Backwoods Bastard sandwich… And in true married couple fashion: halfway through, we switched! The Corsons really liked their food and brews too! Allow me to just take a moment to say that Jessica put away an impressive amount of pepperoni with the Godfather sandwich! Score another successful visit for Founders Brewing Co.! It was a great way to end a fun night!

*Feel not ye bad for the Bailey. He enjoyed a tail-wagging 5 miles today… And he raided our prizes from the SBS immediately upon our arrival home.

And the Stockings Were Hung by the Chimney with Care

On Thursday, two rather exciting things happened. First, a very awesome thing arrived in the mail. It was a present for Bailey from his friend Porter! Let’s just say, he was beyond a little intrigued!

photo(31)
WHAT?! Mail for ME?!?!

Thanks so much Mandy and Porter for the yummy Zuke’s treats! The second thing was that we finished our first batch of Christmas cards!

photo(32)
There’s the first wad! That is accomplishment in a stack, my friends!

On Saturday morning, after finishing out the last full work week of 2011(!!!!), I set out with a mission: to finish my Christmas shopping. I went out hoping for the best, but expecting/preparing for the worst. I even wore my RoadID so that the authorities could call Kevin to come pick up my trampled carcass should chaos ensue among the masses at the mall.

photo(29)I’m going in!!

Thankfully, that wasn’t necessary. I actually had an extremely wonderful shopping experience. It was marginally shocking! I am even grateful for the witch– oops, wrong holiday– Grinch I encountered at American Eagle. She just made everyone else seem that much more friendly and pleasant in contrast.

The result of the day? I, Jennifer Neumann, am finished with my Christmas shopping! Woohoo! All that remains is awaiting the final deliveries of some interweb purchases, and that is all on FedEx and UPS.

Yesterday, I sequestered myself in our guest room and started wrapping Kevin’s presents! Holy ahead of the gameness, Batman! Last year at this time, we were mere hours off the plane from Hawaii and had a lot of shopping left to do! So, I’m feeling extremely ahead of the game by comparison!

Santa's WorkshopKevin pretended to be put out by my signage and even posted a picture of it on FB. It solicited quite the response! What can I say? I’m a writer. Even my "Keep Out" signs have a humorous, inventive flair! :)

And by now, you’re probably wondering what the heck any of this has to do with the title of this post. I’m getting there. Wait. We’re there! While out shopping on Saturday, I picked up the makings for our stockings! We stitched them up. I got out my trusty glue gun and affixed the letters. Bada-bing, bada-boom: I give you our stockings!

photo(30)
I loves me some glittery letters!

More Christmas fun coming later this week! What’s on tap?  A festive fun run, the internet-reveal of our 2011 Christmas card (once I’m certain the non-digital versions have all had a chance to reach far-flung friends so as not to ruin the surprise), a peek at our decked-out maison, the 411 on our cookie-making/decorating and venture into new recipe territory, and good times with family and friends!

Massive Catch-up: A Reunion, Our Christmas Tree, and Gingerbread House Assembly… Among Other Things

Wow. I really couldn’t be bothered to blog at all in the last TWO WEEKS, huh?? I have a good excuse, though. I caught some dastardly bug that left me essentially incapable of doing anything beyond dragging myself out of bed to work and back, with a whole lot of coughing my head off in between. Two weeks and three boxes of tissues later, I am finally feeling better! Woohoo!

So, quickly, the highlights:

Friday, November 25~ You Light Up My Life

After driving back from the east side of the mitten, we decided to take advantage of the fairly decent weather and get the outdoor Christmas decorations—lights, garland, and wreath—up. Actually, a more accurate description would be that Kevin put up the outdoor Christmas decorations. I was starting to feel the first strains of awful and collapsed on the couch under three blankets. Pictures of the decorations to come once it snows a bunch and looks more Christmasy out!

Later that evening, Matt and Allison stopped over to meet Bailey. They were in town for Thanksgiving and for the event of the evening: Kevin and Matt’s 10-year HS reunion. Pre-reunion, the four of us went out to a fabulously delicious dinner at the Derby Station in Gaslight Village. We couldn’t have timed our dinner more perfectly. Our reservations were for 6:30—exactly the same time as the Gaslight Village Tree Lighting Ceremony. Read: live Christmas music, a festive atmosphere, a newly lit tree, warm cookies as we waited for our entrees, and, and, AND a visit with reindeer after the meal. Awesomeness!

Saturday and Sunday, December 3 and 4~ Christmas Tree Hunt: 2011 Edition

There was a decided lack of freshly fallen snow for our tree hunt this year. Good for the work-week commute; not so good for the Yuletide cheer. Instead, there was nothing but rain, rain, and more rain in the weekend forecast. But, no matter! The three of us piled into the car on Saturday and headed off for the Vormittag Tree Farm.

2011-12-03 11.23.46Just a little muddy…

Upon arriving, being welcomed, and declining the proffered saw (Kevin comes prepared with his own!), we made a quick loop of the farm, figuring out where all the different types of spruces, pines, and firs were located this year.

This was to be our quickest trip to the tree farm yet… (To be fair, last year’s tree was obtained with even greater speed, but it was a pre-cut variety.) There was no wandering up and down the aisles, naming and subsequently forgetting the locations of various contenders. Nope. This year, I kid you not, we found our perfect tree: From. The. Car. As we were driving past, "How ’bout that one?" became "Must have that one!" After narrowly avoiding mowing down a small tree in our haste to turn around, we disembarked and circled the tree to see if it was as pretty all the way around. It was! In no time, Kevin had cut the tree down and loaded it onto the roof of the car, while I convinced Bailey to leave the Bailey-size trees and get back in the car. After a quick shake, the tree was bagged and secured to the roof and we were on our way home.

Our tree!

Timmmmbbbbeeerrrrrr!!

The whole weekend was very Christmasy. Getting, lighting, and decorating the tree. Drinking hot chocolate with giant marshmallows. Attending the annual Jubal Brass Christmas concert at Cascade Christian. Heading to the mall after church and leaving with zero Christmas presents. Bailey got some food, and we found gingerbread house cookie cutters for the next weekend’s fun. That is the sum-total of our shopping success. Womp, womp.

2011-12-03 12.51.24Bailey enjoyed carrying around the star!

Tuesday, December 6 through Sunday, December 11~ It’s Beginning to Look/Seem a Lot like Christmas

Annual reviews at work always happen during early- to mid-December. This year, they happened last Tuesday. That (end of the year bonus—woot!) and the office Christmas lunch on Friday, made the work week seem to go by quickly, setting the stage for a truly wonderful weekend.

Oh, and on Thursday, our Christmas cards arrived! We’ll be addressing and mailing them in the next few days, so be sure to look for one in a mailbox near you soon!* And, following that, I’ll be posting about our 2011 cards here after they’ve had a chance to reach their recipients.

*If we have your current address, that is. If we don’t have your current address, whose fault is that?!

This past weekend was full of big-time fun. On Saturday, we needed time to digest after our big weekend-style breakfast before heading out on our run. Enter: the perfect opportunity to put make Bailey’s paw print ornament! We I, as Kevin is sure to say "This wasn’t my idea!", started with a kit from Michaels, and in about 45 minutes, Bailey had been immortalized Hollywood Walk of Ornament of Fame style!

Bailey's Ornament
Super cute, no??

Post-ornament-baking, Kevin, Bailey, and I went out for a five mile run. Holy tiredness. The sun was out, but it was COLD. To add to the chill thrill, the sidewalks were covered in ice, which turned the run into very hard work. Bailey seemed to take a different approach to running on ice. As soon as he set one paw on it, he’d speed up as if to say "Get me off of this cold stuff!" I, for one, was whooped when we got home—like more tired than after a 10-miler. Kevin and Bailey seemed unaffected.

Next up on the list was gingerbread house baking. Kevin had whipped up the dough while I was making breakfast. After its time to chill, it was ready to roll, cut, and bake. After a minor freak-out that we’d be a few bricks short of a load errr, wall panels short of a house, Kevin managed to make enough wall and roof pieces… with dough to spare for star and Mickey Mouse cutouts. Awesome.

2011-12-10 10.52.352011-12-10 15.43.13
So much gingerbread!

While Kevin headed out to an Ironman World Championship viewing party, I turned on the Christmas music and went nuts decorating the house. What started as me gathering up plastic bins filled with excess decorations to go back into basement storage lead to, "This is cute, why isn’t this on display?" Decorations that hadn’t emerged from their neatly labeled storage bins in years were soon decking our halls! Stay tuned for pictures of our decorated tree and the rest of our maison soon as this is already basically the longest post ever.

Once Kevin returned, we whipped up a batch of royal icing, otherwise known as gingerbread house cement, and assembled the gingerbread houses. It was decided that it’s so named because it’s a royal pain in the butt. But! The houses are still standing. So, mission accomplished!

2011-12-10 22.57.31Gingerbread houses: assembled!

Sunday was gingerbread house decorating day! Matt, Jenn, and Maglee Smith came to join in the festivities. First on the agenda was some playtime for the pups. It was a pretty even match. The pups are about the same size and seemed to share a you-bite-me-I’ll-bite-you-back mindset. So all was well in the land of happy puppies.

2011-12-11 13.42.32
Here’s Bailey and his girlfriend Maglee. He has a thing for older women, it would seem…

Post-puppy-playtime, we made another batch of icing, ripped open many bags and boxes of candy, and started decorating our gingerbread houses. We might have eaten as much candy as went on the houses, but… I’d say enough made it unto the houses.

IMG_0294Wouldn’t you say?

Here are the finished masterpieces:

IMG_0295IMG_0296
Beaucoup fabulous, no??

Oh, and here’s a video narrated by Matt for "judging purposes". Thanks to the previous night’s gingerbread cookie contest held by the Oravecs on FB, things had quickly turned into a good-natured contest. Personally, I think they’re both great. :)

2011 gingerbread houses

After decorating the houses, we leashed up the pups and went for a walk down to Reeds Lake and a bit around Gaslight Village. We scoped out our dinner destination, too. After dropping off the pups, we were
soon back in Gaslight Village for a very delicious dinner of pizza, salad, and breadsticks at Big Bob’s Pizza.

All too soon it seems, it was time for the Smiths to head home. We had a blast! Yay for fun weekends and fantastic friends!!

Thanksgiving 2011

On Thanksgiving morning, Brad, Kevin, and I headed out to join the fun of the Anti-Turkey Trot. We’d planned on doing the big Detroit Turkey Trot downtown, but the prospect of getting up super early, fighting traffic on the roads and crowds on the race course, and paying a premium for an impressively ugly shirt left us unwilling to push the registration button. When Kevin found the considerably smaller Anti-Turkey Trot that started at the wonderful hour of 10 a.m. and was close to my parents’ house, we knew we’d found our race.

Brad decided to do the 5k, while Kevin and I opted for the 10k. Well, 5kish and 10kish. Both races ended up giving us a little extra bang for our buck by measuring long. I was surprisingly hyped up and nervous as this was my first 10k race. Brad, on the other hand, was cool as a cucumber about his first 5k.

IMG_1400IMG_1402
Pre-race photos

The race was almost shockingly laid-back and casual. There had been maps floating around, but none of the turns were marked in the least. Seriously? Chalk is cheap, people. Now, this wasn’t so much of a problem for a middle-of-the-packer like me, but when you’re LEADING THE PACK LIKE KEVIN WAS, it’s a problem!

Most of the participants took the turn for the 5k. After that, it was pretty spread out. There was a couple of times we got snagged by traffic lights and had to wait, times when the sidewalk disappeared and we had to jump out into the road and/or off-road it on grass, a single-track bike route, or construction gravel. My favorite (sarcasm) part of the course happened between mile 5 and the finish. This part of the course followed sidewalks along the M59 shopping corridor. Driveways galore, a sidewalk that curved like a lazy river around store signage, and drivers in search of last minute dinner ingredients who couldn’t seem to figure out why all these people were running around with numbers pinned to themselves. The saving grace was my wonderful hubby, who came back after his finish to find me and run me in the last 3/4 mile.

Along the course, there was one aid station being manned by a person with a camera. She caught these pictures of Brad and Kevin and then abandoned ship. There was no photographer when I rolled through.

Brad mid-raceKevin mid-race
Here comes Brad, and there goes Kevin.
Kevin must have snuck up on her as there was only this blurry picture of his backside. Ha!

There was, however, another photographer at the finish line. Somehow, she missed both Kevin and Brad. Boo! We’ll just blame the fact that they were moving at smoking fast speeds! How fast, you ask? Well, Brad finished his first-ever 5k race in fourth place! His time was 22:44 for the 3.4 mile run. Yes, he definitely got all the speedy genes! And Kevin. Well! Winner, winner, turkey dinner! Kevin came in first place in the 10k with a time of 41:02! Wowzas! I’m surrounded by speedy people! However, redeeming fact about the photographer: she did get the following gem of yours truly.

Jennie approaching the finish
I’ll have you know, I passed this happy woman before the finish line, but somehow the hand-done race results show her finishing 2 seconds before me. Hmmm. Which leads us to…

Reason 862 why I love my Garmin: for when the race organizers screw up the finish times and race results.

And that, my friends, is the recap of my first 10k, Brad’s first 5k, and Kevin’s first first-place 10k finish!

After the race, we headed back to my parents’ house, where the smell of turkey was already perfuming the air. There are, sadly, few pictures of the Thanksgiving feast. I blame a combination of the post-race duh factor (also known as the just-be-happy-that-I’m-upright-and-not-taking-up-an-entire-couch factor) and the fact that the table was full of mutinous, don’t-take-my-picture teenagers (me, the shutterbug=vastly outnumbered).

Thanksgiving Table 2011
Kevin snagged this photo of the spread as everyone was shuffling over to the table.

Even though there might not be extensive photo documentation, everything was WONDERFUL. An abundance of supremely delicious food, 18 family persons, 2 family dogs, and, quite possibly (I didn’t check), a partridge in the pear tree. Oh, and, spectacular hubby that he is, Kevin lent me his calf sleeves. My first Thanksgiving dinner rocking compression sleeves under my jeans!

There is so much for which to be thankful! Hope your Thanksgiving was happy!

Thanksgiving Eve 2011

After a super short two-day work week, we headed over to the east side of the mitten. We unloaded in quick fashion and headed off to meet the entire Kotenko contingent for dinner—at BUDDY’S! What does it take to feed 18 of us? Apparently, 3 large antipasto salads, 7 large eight-square pizzas (a combination of plain cheese, pepperoni, and Supers— pepperoni, ham, mushroom, green pepper, and onion), 1 small four-square pizza for the pineapple-eaters, and 2 individual-size gluten-free pizza pies. Yeah, a LOT, and it all disappeared in shockingly speedy fashion!

Plate one of the antipasto salad. As always, I could’ve eaten the entire bowl… if there’d been any left.

Super
Buddy’s Super: Super delicious!

After dinner, Kevin and I headed down to see Ryan and Marie’s newly purchased house. The verdict? I can’t wait to go back when it’s light out! It was dark, so we only got a darkened view of the façade and street and  couldn’t make out the backyard at all. Sadness for the nosy big sis! What we did see of the inside is very cute and full of both original details—like a built-in corner unit in the dining room and 1920s hardware and glass knobs on the interior doors—and potential. I can’t wait to see what happens when they get their DIY-mitts on the place and go all HGTV on it! Oh, and the downtown area: Let’s just say that I could plan to spend a few afternoons going through those shops! Happiness!
