Three Things Thursday: Half Marathon Countdown, Battling a Hunger Games Addiction, and the S.S. Jennie and Annie Edition

Thing 1: Half Marathon Countdown
It’s getting real, people! As of Sunday, when my calendar switched over to its current view, Half Marathon Day is visible! Yup, it’s hanging out in the lower right-hand corner, reminding me that: MY FIRST HALF MARATHON IS 30 DAYS AWAY! Woohoo!

The great news is that I feel ready already. Last weekend, I did my longest run to date: 11.11 miles (Because once you’ve run 11, what’s another .11 to fill the screen with 11s?). This weekend, 12’s on the schedule. Next weekend, I plan to run the full 13.1. Then, it’s just a downhill coast to the big day. Excited much? Yes, I am. :)

In other exciting news, the organizers just announced that the half marathon portion of the event has sold out!

Thing 2: Hunger Games Addiction
It’s true. It’s happened again. I’ve been completely sucked into a series! This time it’s The Hunger Games series. I started Book One on, ohhhh, Sunday. Books One and Two are read. On Wednesday evening, when I realized I was about 10% done with Book Three, I officially cut myself off for 24 hours. Don’t worry. I haven’t gotten the shakes… yet. If you haven’t already read this series, you might want to check it out. I’m just sayin’.

Thing 3: Part of the Schooner Jennie and Annie Has Washed Ashore on the Leelanau Peninsula
I had to throw this one in for good measure. If we’re FB friends, you’ve already seen it. But what can I say? I love instances where “Jennie” is spelled the right way. :)

Ok, here’s the short story: A piece of a schooner that sunk in 1872 washed ashore in one of my favorite vacation spots recently. The name of said ship is thought to be the Jennie and Annie! For the long story, click here. As Kevin so astutely put it: “Do you see the irony in the fact that it is the Jennie and the Annie (eg. Annie Villa Irvin) and in about a month, the shipwreck that will be Kevin Neumann and Jeff Irvin will wash across the finish line in TX? (Ideally in under 3:05).” Yes, yes, I do.

Good luck at your half mary

So excited for you and the half! You’re going to do great chica!

Spike just finished the Hunger Games and had a mixed review for them so I can’t decide if I’ll pick them up soon or not.

So cool about the shipwreck, how awesome would that be to find. I love it up in Leelanau too!

Thanks! I’m getting super excited! :)

I can see why Spike might have had a mixed review. Still, I’d vote for you to pick up the series. It’s not earth-shattering or flawless literary material by any means, but it’s interesting and a really fast read! What’s there to lose? ;)

  3. Matt Oravec says:

That is awesome!!!! Your training sounds right on too, so you will be MORE than prepared to tackle this race!

I knew last year when we met at Glass City it was only a matter of time until you went for the big race! Make sure you have fun out there!

That is A LOT of ship to wash up on shore… seems weird that it can be sunk for almost 150 years and then all of a sudden, HELLO WORLD! I AM HERE! Gotta love the currents in the lake!

    • jennifer says:

Thanks! “MORE than prepared” sounds good! The only variable looks like it’s going to be the weather. You know, if it decides to be 80+ degrees or something… But even if that happens, I’m going to have so much fun! After all, that’s goal number 1! :)

  4. 30 days? Heck yeah! That’s awesome! You’re gonna smoke your first half. That’s so exciting.

I’ve been reading quite a bit too, but it sounds like you’re a SUPER fast reader when you get something good to read.

That ship remnant is pretty cool. I read the story online after you posted it on Facebook.

  5. Mandy says:

I am totally addicted to The Hunger Games. They are such good books. I can’t wait to see the movie!

  6. Colleen says:

Hahaha… that’s awesome about the boat and the link between you and Annie, Jeff and Kevin! :)

I might have to go get the Hunger Games. Although I had so little free time, maybe that will be my first series to read in my new tub! :)

Yay for the half marathon. You are going to rock it Jennie! :)

    • jennifer says:

Isn’t that the most ironic/cool/bizarre thing?? The Jennie and Annie resurfaces after 140 years… right before Jennie and Annie cheer on Jeff and Kevin, who say they’re going to be wrecked after the marathon. :)

I definitely vote for reading the Hunger Games in your awesome new tub. Although, I did have trouble putting the book down, so I hope you have a really good hot water heater in your new place. ;)

Thanks! I’m really looking forward to it! :)
